Italy by Nature

Italy is fairly known for it's scenic and bustling cities. Milan, the fashion capitol of the world. Venice, the romantic floating city. Rome, once the center of the ancient world. But, as interesting as those places may be, Italy really seemed impressive off the typical tourist track. Exploring Italy's more natural side, was not only easy to get to, but really surpassed the beauty of the major cities.

Lake Como, a short distance north of Milan lie the picturesque towns that hug this mesmerizing lake. With the pre-alpine, Larian Triangle mountains as a backdrop, quaint towns running along the coast and the sun shimmering on the lake's waters, it's no wonder why it is considered one of the most beautiful places in Europe. You can arrive by train to a few of the towns, and bus to the rest of them. Get lost in the poetic brilliance and feel the beauty of your surroundings. If you're looking for an inexpensive place to stay the night, try Ostello Menaggio in Menaggio. It's not too fancy, but if all you need is a place to sleep and shower, I'd recommend it.

Forno di Zoldo, one of the towns of the dramatic region of the Italian Dolomites. A stay here and you're sure to quickly reconnect with nature. Everything is perfect. From the show-stopping sunset, to the quiet fall hikes. Make sure to add this to your itinerary. It will help you feel more connected to a real Italy, instead of maneuvering through tourist congested streets. To boot, it's only about an hour and a half north of Venice. Staying at the cozy Bed & Breakfast, Casa Ai Lali is a great suggestions. It's close to the trails, restaurants, markets and public transportation. The wood-pellet stoves will keep you warm in the fresh autumnal evening chill.

Cinque Terre, it seems that these majestic five villages strung together by a old trail way is either a love or hate experience for visitors. Frankly the hate strongly depends on the time of year you go. An off season trip is suggested when visiting these striking towns. Otherwise you may feel like your waiting in line for a Disney ride, when hiking the trail. Mid-October may be the perfect time to visit, the weather during the day is warm enough to walk the trails in light gear, the amount of other tourists seems almost unapparent and the accommodations are less expensive.

Lucca, no matter if you arrive during the day or on a misty chilly night, the city's wall alone will set the perfect scene for this romantic city. Most visitors spend their nights in one of the many Bed & Breakfasts within the city walls. Other than the aesthetic of the city walls, the city also has a plethora of great dining options, a scenic walking trail on top of the city wall and occasional festive events throughout the year. Some of the other recommended things to see are the church of San Martino, Guinigi Tower, Amphitheater Square and the Contemporary Art Museum.

A beautiful place to spend your night is in one of Lucca's oldest, but still elegant, B&Bs - La Magnolia. Housed in an old palazzo dating back to the 16th century, with a garden that grows various plants from bananas to magnolias, hence the name, the romanticism continues. With a gorgeous outdoor patio and elegantly decorated rooms, you will be sure to get a lot out of this small B&B. For a more simple, rustic place to rest B&B Le Violette is a great option. Owner Elisabeth Warren, not to be confused with Massachusetts State Senator, is a helpful and energetic host who will help you enjoy your stay in Lucca. Accommodations are more basic than B&B La Magnolia, but it also comes at a cheaper price, a great option for budget travelers.

There are even some B&Bs outside of Lucca, great if you need to "get away" without actually going too far. B&B Sunrise is a quaint Bed & Breakfast located near the peaceful Massaciuccoli Lake. The lake is definitely worth a visit if you're nearby, it's definitely the highlight of the area. Owner Antonietta Pozzi, does however run another B&B within the city walls that may seem better suited for visitors only looking to spend a few days in the area.
