Sun, fun and a world of a difference on this island. Tenerife is the largest island of the Spanish, Canary Islands, home to beautiful beaches, amazing year round temperatures and more outdoor activities than you can fit into a short vacation. Depending on your traveling personality you might want to do some research before buying your ticket here. The two most popular vacation spots are Puerto de la Cruz, in the north, and Costa Adeje, in the south. The difference between the two are like "night and day."

For the Party Animal
You want the south. Here you'll find everything to ensure your vacation is always in the fun zone. The golden sand beaches with hunky speedo wearing Adonises and topless tanning bombshells, sprinkled with huts serving cold alcoholic beverages. The party really never stops. There is a strip lined with dozens of clubs and bars, blasting every style of music and when one closes, you move to the next. Definitely get friendly with the locals, they will tell you where to go and at what time because in Costa Adeje, everything has its time.

For the Relaxer
It really depends on your style of relaxing. If being on a beach all day, sipping cold drinks is your definition of relaxing then the south is once again your match. If you're looking for a friendly, laid-back hostel to balance your partying and your relaxing, check out La Tortuga Hostel. It's a great place to meet cool people that offers a comfortable and mellow atmosphere away from the other more party hostels. There's plenty to do within a short walking distance, like El Duque beach, La Tasquita Flamenco Bar and Achaman Disco Club.

Now, if you define relaxation as walks along a 17th century city, calm ocean breezes with even more mellow tourists than the north is your place. Summers in Puerto de la Cruz are low season in Tenerife. You will surely find most of the tourists partying their vacation away in the south. But, the north, there is something really nice about it in the summer. It's a different world than the south. More conducive for leisurely walks along the restaurant and divey bar filled streets. Even the main strip, where most hotels and tourists are feels relaxed.
For the Nature Explorer
It's nearly a tie. Both the north and the south offer a plethora of inexpensive excursions, with the most adventurous ones trekking to the center of the island, near the Teide Volcano. Although in reality the north feels more connected to Nature than the touristic south. A short walk from the old center and you will find yourself on a multi-level park. In fact, many visitors come to the north but spend most of their day hiking. And for that I would recommend staying at a hotel that offers you exactly what you need, a bed and a bathroom. Hotel Puerto Azul, does just that. It’s inexpensive and basic. Great if you're planning to spend most of your time out and about.

That being said, if you're creative you can always find a little relaxation in the fun filled late nights of the south, and also some animation in the more relaxing north. It's not my favorite destination in the world, but if it interests you, by all means, go for it.
