The Dance of Fire & Ice

"Where am I?" A question that's been on repeat in my mind like an old scratched, seamlessly looping vinyl. My tired eyes peer out the bus window, only kept open by the extremely foreign terrain that puzzle's my mind.
My redeye flight landed just a few hours ago. And now more-so than ever, I understand why it's called that. But, I find it hard to close them, even for this now "poster child" of redeyes. The excitement of bathing in the geothermic pools of Blue Lagoon and the diverse landscape outside my window are enough to keep me wide awake.
Driving along this island you will find the most peculiar of sights. Like chunks of volcanic rock strewn across a once glacier flattened landscape, softly carpeted by a thick layer of pine green moss lying in perfect contrast. If trolls and fairies were to exist, this would certainly be the place to find them. It's a landscape that's equally extraterrestrial as it is strikingly beautiful. A landscape where fire and ice artistically collaborate to make this country exquisitely unique. Every few miles of this island offers a new feast for the curious eyes. In fact, that's what's making Iceland the new "must see" destination. With the colorful mountains of Landmannalaugar, the hot spring pools spas of Blue Lagoon and Laugarvatn Fontana, and wondrous coastal rock formations of Snaefellsnes, there is almost too much to fit into one visit.
Getting to Iceland is extremely easy and can be a relatively inexpensive flight from the United States and Europe. A few Icelandic airlines offer a lot of options for cheap flights and free multi-day stopovers - a benefit worth taking advantage of.
Equally as easy, is getting around and exploring the history and natural beauty of this quirky island. Excursion companies like Reykjavik Excursions and Extreme Iceland will take you to some of the most amazing parts of Iceland with guides who can range from the decedents of Viking heroes to the mother of a famous musician. Iceland is for explorers.
If Iceland's not on your list of places to visit, than grab a pen and put it near the top! With inexpensive accessibility, a number of great adventures and amazing natural wonders - you'll be wishing you knew about it sooner!
